Fitzgibbon, currently an assistant coach at the Roosters, has often been touted as McGregors long-term replacement.
Now after the axe fell on the embattled coach, Fitzgibbons name is being touted once again.
The 43-year-old, who still lives near Wollongong, will not be applying for the role according to one of his old teammates.
